Lindsay Clancy’s trial recently ended in a hung jury. There was no unanimous verdict. There was a good reason for that.

People who take SSRI drugs for depression are administered a drug that has significant risks for suicidal and homicidal ideation. It’s right on the packaging of the drug. Lindsay Clancy under the advice of doctors was issued 8 different drugs, (at least four antidepressants) which only worsened her symptoms and created in her a desperation to end her own life and the lives of her children.

The elaborate plan that Lindsay Clancy hatched in her mind to kill herself and her children likely came directly from the psychoactive drugs that were administered to her at the time she was admitted for postpartum depression. That is a disorder that accompanies childbirth for some many women every year.

The alarming result of strangling her children is as heinous a crime as a mass school shooting which coincidentally is a problem linked with the same psychoactive drugs. Please think about that. Remember the elaborate plans that mass shooters have made before they went on their killing sprees.

The idea of a drug coctail causing a person to become psychologically unstable can make us all squirm. We wonder if we ourselves or someone we love could be either a victim of someone who has suicidal or homicidal ideation when taking the drug , acting out murdurous inner directives, or a person transformed into a mass murderer.

But please admit that there’s enough evidence to show that people are vulnerable to exactly these outcomes. We have seen it so many times now that there should not be blame to people caught up in the horrible outcomes that have become more and more familiar over time.

Continuing to administer these drugs that have known tragic side effects is what you get when you keep them as standards of care without questioning their use.

The outcome experienced by Lindsay Clancy and her whole family seems to indicate that we should be more cautious. Maybe instead of a drug coctail we could do something simpler. Administering estrogen to the people that are suffering depression after childbirth because of the precipitous drop in estrogen may be a more rational approach. That may be a better alternative that provides help for women who are suffering and probably could help prevent just this kind of tragic outcome.

But that approach wouldn’t be a huge money-maker. So it is not the standard of care.

When doctors administer a drug that causes suicidal and homicidal ideation but it is the standard of care it seems that the doctor can’t be blamed.

When mothers go to seek relief from postpartum depression and they end as Lindsay Clancy has with a shattered life and a terrible tragic outcome, it seems that we shouldn’t blame her either.

Blame the drugs.
